Freecyle

Mood: Intrigued
Last ate: Bowl of generic Frosted Flakes
Word: Hubris

The word above comes from an essay I read in the New Yorker about a retired taxi cab driver. The cabbie, Bobby Lowich, declares: "I don't want to sound like a hubristic son of a bitch, but there isn't a thing about cabs that I don't know." Kind of gives you faith in the intelligence of cab drivers....

Anyway! I just found a site, while sending out sales emails, for a grass roots organization that I really like. Check it out at Freecycle.org. There being no group here in Riverside, I am thinking about volunteering to be the moderator. We'll see what's involved....

My Computer's Persona & Job Search

Mood: Apprehensive
Last ate: Bowl of Cheerios with Brown Sugar

Jealous of Bella's computer being able to talk to her in a variety of voices, I decided to use the Play to File feature of the Natural Voice Reader (see Downloads section, bottom of right column) to create speech to replace the default Windows sounds. For example, when I start the computer it says, "Hi, Greg. I hope you are doing well. How can I help you?" Or, my personal favorite, when I empty the Recycle Bin, it says, "Greg, I will shred those documents for you. It's my pleasure." The sounds, combined with the desktop picture I made out of the drawing I mentioned in the previous post, have created a sort of persona for my computer. I think she needs a name now. Any suggestions?

Here's a screenshot of my desktop:

Not having school today, my main priority will be looking for a job. I found a couple telemarketing classifieds that are possibilities which I will follow up on later, and I will go out to the Galleria and surrounding areas to apply anywhere and everywhere. (Almost.)

My apprehension comes from not wanting to switch to night classes to make time for a day job; I really like my teacher and don't want to risk ending up with a bad one. But money, unfortunately, is the main priority right now. I hate money with a passion....

I also need to spend at least a few hours editing. But doing my laundry this morning is taking up most of the time I would otherwise allot to that task.

Finally, I want to spend at least an hour sending out sales emails.

(I'd rather spend time with Bella than do all this. But she has work and class, so there's no excuse! Drats....)

Forgot to Mention

A few posts ago I listed everything I should be doing. I forgot one biggie: I need to study for my driver's permit! Maybe over the weekend I can do that. Scary as it sounds, I've been thinking a lot about having my own car. (I never thought that would be something to which I would look forward.) Of course, I doubt I will ever like driving, but it's something I can no longer afford to avoid.

When I got out of class today, I was so inspired with what I had learned that I came home and played around in Adobe Illustrator. I made a "charcoal" sketch I entitled "Eye Know". It's sort of a modern portrait. I guess I might compare the style to Picasso. I will have to post it here on the site when I get a little time.

Well, I'm going to watch American Splendor, which I have been wanting to see since it was in the theatres, before I go to bed. I'm sure I will fall asleep during it, so the sooner I get started, the better.

You've Been Subscribed

I went ahead and created the mailing list on my web site. So if you're reading this journal entry in your email... YOU'VE BEEN SUBSCRIBED! Mwahahahaha....

Now, time to call Bella! :)

Yahoo Group

The missing journal emails seem to be a problem with the Yahoo group. I may have to switch back to using a mailing list on my web site. But we'll see if this one goes through, first.

Too Much to Do

Mood: Happy / Overwhelmed
Last ate: The remains of a Supreme Burrito from Mama Chuy's

So here is everything I should be doing:
  • Going to school

  • Editing manuscripts
  • Sending out sales emails

  • Finishing my GMSEditor.com web site

  • Advertising my freelance editor services

  • Looking for a job

  • Spending as much time as possible with Bella!

  • Eating

  • Sleeping

I think that's it! There just aren't enough hours in the day. Unfortunately, I've been spending the last week getting used to going to school again, not keeping up with other things that need to be done. Today, I think, I am working towards balancing things better.

I was supposed to call the automated jury system last night, but forgot. (I had originally called it on Saturday, and it said that my service had been postponed; it instructed me to call back last night at 6:30.) When I remembered this morning a little before 8:00, I immediately called... and of course I was supposed to be at the courthouse at 8:30! There was no way I would have made it, so I decided I would go to class instead. I called the system back before leaving for school and tried to postpone, but the office was closed. I called again from a pay phone at school, but only got a busy signal. (I suspect the 800 number they have doesn't permit calls from pay phones.) Finally, I got ahold of someone when I called upon my return home. I explained I was in school, so they granted me an excuse! WOOHOO!!! I won't have to serve for at least six months. :)

Oh, a couple posts ago, I mentioned the evil hosting provider which I am no longer using. They have now proven to me just how evil they are: they are trying to steal my money! But they won't get another penny out of me.

Well, I better get back to editing this manuscript. (I originally logged on tonight to verify the spelling of a couple of proper names, and now I've been on for over a half hour!) I need to get some more work done before calling Bella. Oh, Bella... I LOVE YOU!
